Making its debut at the auto show in Los Angeles. A 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 will be powering the Gladiator at launch, making 260 pound-feet of torque and 285 horsepower. It comes standard with four-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission on all of the trim levels. There is an optional eight-speed automatic. Jeep is claiming that it will be offering a 7,650 pound class-leading tow capacity and up to 1,600 pound 4×4 payload.
Those who are interested in a bit more grunt might want to hold out until calendar year 2020 comes around when there is a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel scheduled to join Jeep’s lineup that will offer a robust 442 pound-feet of twist and 260 horses. The diesel, unlike gas engines, will be offered only with an eight-speed automatic.
2020 Jeep Gladiator Engine Specs
The 2020 Jeep Gladiator is powered by a V6 3.6-liter pentastar gas Jeep engine, with this application delivering 260 pound feet (or 353 newton-meters) worth of torque and 285 horsepower (or 212 kilowatts). It can pull a robust 7,650 pounds, and can handle a 1,600 pound payload, and comes with a rollup cover for its bed and three position tailgate. The rear bench folds down flat to give you additional storage space, and the LED lights get triggered on its quarter trim panels so that the space is illuminated.
The Gladiator provides all of the necessary hardware for tracking off-road trips that ranges from skid plates, a limited-slip, electric rear- and front-axle lockers, Dana 44 axles, and a pair of 4×4 systems. Things are dialed up a notch by the Rubicon models with 33-inch tires, protective cargo bed and cab rails, steel rear bumper, electronic disconnecting sway bars, Fox shocks, improved suspension travel and articulation, and 4.10 axles. The Rubicon is capable of running up to a 35-inch rubber without a lift, be equipped with a forward camera that can show anything that is less than two feet in front of the truck and may be submitted with a winch-ready, front steel bumper.
An approach 43.6 degree angle is featured on the Gladiator, along with the capability fording up to 20 inches worth of water, 11.1 inches of ground clearance, 26 degree departure angle, and breakover 20.3 degree angle. Despite its extra-long wheelbase, there still is lots of off-road capability as well.
The inspiration for the Wrangler design is very clear, with square tail lights, seven-slot grille, and circular headlights. The open-air capabilities of the Wrangler also make jumping over to the Gladiator with its fold-down windshield, available hardtops or soft tops, and removable aluminum doors.
In the back there is a five-foot steel bed that features a tonneau cover, 115-volt three-prong plug, spray-in bed liner, under-rail bed lighting, and integrated tie downs. The bed box sides have been purposely left low for easy reach for loading and unloading items. The three-position, damped tailgate in the center setting matches with the top part of the rear wheel housing and allows the Gladiator to be able to carry 20 sheets of drywall flat or 4×8 plywood. The Gladiator might not be as spacious as the Toyota Tacoma or Ford Ranger but it still offers significant utility.
Inside, its heritage-inspired layout features a horizontal dash that has a trapezoidal end, metal plated trim pieces, rubberized touch points, and lots of storage cubbies. For a greater premium feeling, Overland models come with wrapped instrument panels and accent stitching.
Infotainment is spearheaded by its fourth-generation Uconnect system and either a 8.5-, 7- or 5-inch touchscreen which depends on its trim level. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities are standard and the navigation has a 8.4-inch display.
The Gladiator, for increased safety purposes, offers a backup camera and dynamic grid lines, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.
2020 Jeep Gladiator Pricing and Release Date
The 2020 Jeep Gladiator pickup truck will be going on sale during 2019’s second quarter and be available in the Rubicon, Overland, Sports S, and Sport trim levels. We are hoping to drive it soon. This unit is mated with a six-speed manual gearbox along with an optional eight-speed automatic. Starting in 2020, Jeep also will be offering a six-cylinder 3.0 liter diesel with 442 pound-foot (600 nm) of torque and 260 horse power (194 kilowatts).
